The weekend before I left, we were lucky enough to spend the weekend down in Santa Rosa Beach, FL with some of our good friends. It was too cold to get in the water but we were able to enjoy the weekend. Between jumping fences to get in hot tubs, trying to keep Lori from going topless in a parade, and trying our hardest to locate the shuffleboard equipment we had a great time. I suppose I should explain the Lori going topless in a parade comment. When the girls went to the store to get some condiments for lunch after getting out of the hot tub, the dirty old man behind the counter told Lori since she wasn't wearing green (St. Patrick's Day) she could only ride on his float in the parade if she took her top off. Ha ha. We went to the St. Patrick's Day Parade along Highway 30-A on our way to Panama City for shopping and dinner. It was the fastes parade ever. Maybe 10 floats but we were loaded up with hats, beads, candy, and even cupcakes! After the parade we meandered our way down 30-A to Panama City and went shopping around Pier Park and had dinner at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville.

After we arrived back home from the fun weekend with friends, the final packing had to be done. On Tuesday March 22nd, I went to get the trailer and my friend Jordan Mullins came to help me load everything into the trailer. Jordan and his wife Shelly are going to rent our house while he finishes law school for the next two years. They moved in as soon as I moved out so Lori is currently living with them until she moves out West in early June. It took Jordan and I over 5 hours to load everything. This little fact will come in handy later in the story.

On Wednesday March 23rd, I left Montgomery at 4:45am and pointed my truck west toward Oklahoma City. With the truck loaded down and trailer in tow it took me 14.5 hours to get to Edmond where my loving family was waiting on me. We had a great dinner prepared by my wonderful sisters. It was great to see everyone since I probably won't be back to Oklahoma until Thanksgiving. This fact makes me very sad because my sister Heather is about to have a baby later this month. I left Edmond around 7am on the 24th and drove to Roswell, NM to see my Grandparents. It was great to see Roswell again, remembering all the childhood memories I made visiting the Grandparents on Spring Break growing up. I was able to see Grandma and Grandpa Bell's new place and catch up with them, plus I got a free dinner at Golden Corral. I had planned to head straight West towards Phoenix on the 25th but the mountains were steeper than I was comfortable with and there was a snow storm headed that way. So, I got up at 5:45am and headed South to El Paso which also mandated a trek over some mountains but I was able to avoid the snow. Because of the mountains and the weight of the load, my truck was only averaging 9-10 MPG. Just outside of Carlsbad, NM I saw a sign that said "NO SERVICES FOR NEXT 137 MILES". I honestly was not sure if I would be able to make it but luckily a good portion of that distance was downhill out of the mountains and I made it to El Paso with almost 1.5 gallons of gas to spare.

I finally got in to Phoenix and stayed with my cousin Alisha and her two little girls. It was great to catch up with her since I had not seen her in probably 8 years or more. I woke up early on Saturday morning and drove in to LA to stay with the Frost family. They actually live in San Marino and I was very excited to have IN-N-OUT Burger for my first meal in California. I enjoyed catching up with Chris and hanging out with Caleb and Aidan. We had a water balloon fight in the front yard and watched a lot of March Madness. Sunday morning I headed out around 5:50am toward my ultimate destination of Santa Clara, CA. Luckily when I had come out to find a place to live in early February I met some members of the Church who were willing to volunteer for unloading the trailer. I got in to Santa Clara around 12pm, after one of the most beautiful drives through the mountains of California. I have been told that Pacific Coast Highway is even more amazing and I will be making that trip on my way to my cousin Clint's wedding in Malibu toward the end of May.

After driving 2,754 miles, I arrived in Santa Clara, I got my keys, signed a bunch of papers, and drove around to the unloading area. It was all a little surreal to be standing in California about to unload all my worldly goods into a two bedroom apartment in a complex that looks more like a resort! My reflective contemplation was short-lived because the moving helpers had arrived. Now, if you recall it took 5 hours to load the trailer but with the help of my new friends Jason, Miles, & Rob we had the trailer and truck unloaded, up the stairs, and in my second floor apartment in only 1 hour. They were pretty amazing and didn't even complain that we had packed in ridiculously heavy wardrobe boxes that took all 4 of us to get up the stairs. I spent the first week in California getting unpacked, looking for furniture, and becoming familiar with the area.

That is all I have for now but I will try to update you on other happenings during my first week here, my first week of work, and the awesome places that are all around me now.

I'm back!

I am going to make a conscious effort to keep my blog up to date this time. This will probably only last until Lori gets here in June but I will do my best. The picture at the top is the view I have from my part of Silicon Valley. I am living in Santa Clara, CA and working in Mountain View, CA. More posts will be coming over the next few days covering the journey out to California, the first week in a new part of the world, and the first few days at work. EXTREMELY LONG POST AHEAD!

Well I managed to avoid getting typhoid, malaria, dengue fever, and all the horrible diseases the doctor warned me about when going to India. But I came home to a snowy and freezing Chicago and got one heck of a cold. The drugs I took to help relieve the sinus pressure today knocked me out at 5pm so of course I woke up at 1am and can't get back to sleep. Luckily for you it means I now have time to write a good long post about my trip to India!

It all started with a trek through the Chicago streets with my luggage. My classmate Lenka and I were supposed to meet at the school between 3 and 3:30 so we could go to the airport together. It took me longer to get everything together than I expected and then I barely missed the train at 3pm so I had to wait until 3:15. I didn't want to have a big heavy coat to lug around in India so I decided to just brave the cold in a thermal t-shirt and button up shirt. I finally got to the school at 3:37 with snow falling on me. The security guard informed me that if I was looking for a blond girl who isn't "from around here"...she already left for the airport. So I lugged my nearly 50 lb suitcase over a couple blocks to the blue line and headed towards O'hare. As my sister and brother-in-law found out recently (although I had forgot), the blue line does not go all the way through to the airport on the weekends. So I had to lug my suitcase up some stairs out to the street and onto a bus about half way there. Then I had to get off the bus...back on the train...and finally arrived at O'hare. Once in the airport I saw that there was actually no line for the international ticket counter at American Airlines but noticed they also have self-serve kiosks. In honor of my wife who loves self check out at Wal-Mart and other self serve things, I decided to give it a try. I got through the whole process and then a screen popped up that said, "Sorry, you must use a live attendant. Thank you." So I turned around to go to the human service counter and somehow in the 5 minutes I was at the kiosk, 100 people had jumped in line for the international counter at AA. After a 30 minute wait in line, I finally reached the counter. The ticket agent then told me that I had already checked in at the kiosk and did not have to wait in line. I informed her that I tried to but it refused to print my boarding pass or luggage tags. She had to get a supervisor to override something and then I was finally checked in, my bag on its way. At this point in the trip it weighed 46 lbs. The attendant told me I could only buy 4 lbs of souvenirs. Ha ha.

Once I got to the gate, I finally met up with Lenka and we had one last American meal at the food court before our trip to India. I had chicken fingers, mac & cheese, and bread. It was delicious. After all this I was still at the gate 2 hours before the plane was scheduled for departure. Unfortunately because we got our tickets late, Lenka and I were not able to sit together on the 15 hour flight to Delhi. I sat next to a very nice Indian man who liked to talk. Luckily he went to sleep pretty soon after take off. I sweet talked the nice couple in front of me into letting me use their ac/dc outlet to plug in my laptop. I was able to essentially finish my U.S. Free Trade Agreements paper. It felt good to be so productive, especially since I can't sleep on planes. I watched a couple movies, some TV shows, and played a few games on the AA network. We finally landed in Delhi around 10:15pm Delhi time. After a small scare with our luggage (ours must have been the last two on the plane), we found the sign for our conference and met a few of the Indian students who were there to pick us up. When we got out to the curb our taxi wasn't there. Apparently the taxi driver had fallen asleep in the parking lot and they had to go wake him up. It was at this moment we began to notice how bad the smog was. Besides the distinct smell it was hard to breathe at first. We finally got our taxi driver awake and took a one hour ride to the hotel. We couldn't see much on the way to the hotel because it was dark but I could already tell it was much dirtier and far different than anywhere I had ever been in my life. Once we got to the hotel we were informed that we had roommates for the week and that mine was from Australia. It was after midnight by the time I got to my room and I had not slept in nearly 30 hours. After a quick hello from my roommate who had already been sleeping, I hit the sack and slept really well.

I woke up around 8am the next morning and learned that my roommate was from Canberra, Australia and he worked for the Aussie government while pursuing his MBA. Adam (that is his name) proved to be a good roommate and we hung out quite a bit during the trip. I went down for breakfast and honestly have no idea what it is that I ate but it was delicious. I met Elisabeth who was Austrian at breakfast and along with Lenka we decided to go to Nehru place which was very close on the map. We could exchange money there and possibly shop a little. It was during this excursion that we learned how not to scale maps in India are! We walked probably 3 or 4 miles having to ask for directions a half dozen times before we finally found Nehru place. Eventually we did find it and we exchanged our American dollars for rupees. The exchange rate is essentially 50 to 1. I felt like a rich man with a few thousand rupees in my pocket. We made it back to the hotel for lunch...only to find out there was no lunch provided and the information session had been postponed until later in the afternoon. So we met some of the other students in the lobby and decided we wanted to go buy some bottled water and grab lunch. So Lenka, Adam, myself, and Donna (Adam's classmate from Australia) went out together. We found a lovely pizza place and had lunch. Lenka and I split a cheese pizza and had two cokes for a total of $4. Here are a couple pics of us at the pizza place.

Later that evening they picked us all up from the hotel in a bus and we went to India gate which is a monument built in honor of the freedom fighters of India. In case you were asleep in world history class...India used to be a British colony until it won its independence. After India gate we went to the opening ceremony of the conference that was entitled "Crushed Ice". We were requested to wear our national outfit or something that identified our country. After the speeches and a few cultural dances and music shows the party started. We had a good time and Adam and I may have been the only two who successfully avoided the dance floor. People in India love to dance! Below are a few pics from India Gate and "Crushed Ice".

That gets us through the first day in India. Day two meant the preliminary round of the debate competition and a trip to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. My roommate and I overslept and had to get dressed in about 2 minutes. We both wore suits assuming everyone else would do the same for the debate but we forgot about the trip to Agra. Needless to say we were the only ones in suits and we had to wear them all day! The topic for the preliminary round of the debate was, "A borderless world is like an odorless perfume...pointless." We drew for the motion so we had to argue that borders are good. We naturally attacked it from a legal perspective or control of borders being the definition of a country. We threw in some cultural preservation and topped it off with protection of natural resources and local economies of scale. We were scored individually and found out later that day on the way back from Agra that both Lenka and I had advanced to the final rounds. The debate started late and lasted longer than it was supposed to. We were supposed to leave for Agra at 10:30am but we didn't pull out of the parking lot until noon. On the way there we stopped for gas and a bathroom break. We had not been informed as to what the lunch plan so we all bought snacks at the gas station. They apparently didn't have enough change for all of us...so instead of rupees I was given various candies as change. Ha ha. Once we were back on the road they passed out prepacked lunches. I mainly stuck to rice & chicken, and bread because everything else was so spicy. There were two different buses on the trip and apparently our bus had all the forks. We found out later that the other bus had to eat their lunch with their hands.

The Taj Mahal closes at 5:30pm...we realized about half way to Agra (it is 200 km from Delhi) that we would be cutting it close. Once we finally arrived we had to take an electric bus the last 1 km. As we got off the electric bus we could see them closing the gates and all began to run to the ticket counter. We thought surely after 5.5 hours on a bus and having a group of 50+ they would let us in to at least snap a few pics. They don't bend the rules for anyone. You only have to be inside at 5:30 and you can stay as long as you wish. We got there at 5:32 and were denied entry. The students talked a shopkeeper into letting us stand on his roof and take pictures from a great distance. It was dusk so the pics didn't really turn out well at all. As we were leaving the roof the shop keeper started charging everyone 200 rupees for the privilege of using his roof. Luckily, myself and 4 others had been able to sneak out before the fee was collected. So we all boarded the buses for the 6+ hour trek home. We were all pretty much in shock that we had come that far and didn't get to go in. Everyone was pretty upset but by the end of the week it proved to be an experience that brought us all together as a group and helped us to forge some good friendships. On the way home we all shared a lot about our lives and got to know each other much better. We stopped at McDonald's for dinner which was interesting because they don't eat beef in India (sacred cows and all). Everything on the menu was chicken but it wasn't chicken nuggets or anything like that. Instead of the Big Mac they have the Maharaja which is crazy spicy. I just got a chicken burger (ground chicken which is grilled like a burger) and fries. It was actually pretty good. We finally got back to the hotel about 1am...we finally got out of our suits and hit the sack.

Day 3 was the final round of the debates. The topic for the final round was "Peace, love, and harmony are the emissaries of stagnation and destruction...the world needs chaos to evolve and grow." I drew to be for the motion so I was against peace, love, and harmony. We competed individually in the finals and the audience was permitted to ask a question at the end of your speech. I focused on defining the terms...a typical lawyer approach and pointed out that the greatest innovation and growth of business into a global economy occurred after WWII. One of the audience members took great offense to my claim regarding WWII. He asked how I could stand there and say that WWII was a good thing when 70 million died. I pointed out that I didn't say the War was a good thing...the advancement that came after was the good thing. I didn't place probably because I wasn't yelling or angry. Parliamentary style debate is much different than moot court or anything you do in law school. It was interesting to see how different it really was. My classmate Lenka placed third overall and her friend Hanka from Czech Republic took second. It was nice to see the international students succeeding against the Indian students since they had the topics for weeks and we had them for about 1 day.

After the debate we had lunch at the school cafeteria...spicy, spicy, spicy! Then we were able to convince the organizers to take us to see some temples. We were able to see two temples that were very impressive. They were not the typical touristy sites either. I really enjoyed seeing a real temple and people practicing their religion right in front of us. We had to remove our shoes and socks which gave some cause to reconsider but it was a wonderful cultural experience. Here are a few pics of the debate and the temples we visited.

When we got back to the school we were asked to participate in a team-building competition against the Indian students who had won the event earlier in the day. So two guys from South Africa and myself decided to represent the international students. The objective was to pass each other through a web of string without touching any of the strings. Then you had to move a bunch of fruit from one basket to another about 20 yards away but you couldn't use your hands. They told us the only rule was that you could not crawl under the web. We had seen the Indian students picking each other up and slowly handing each other through the web but I had a different idea. Once they said GO! I got down on all fours and the two guys from South Africa jumped off my back and over the web! We got a standing ovation for our ingenuity. Then I crawled through the web on my own and they started the relay. We ended up winning and our prize was a big box of cookie straws. They were delicious and I was glad to have something to eat that wasn't spicy finally!

We had about an hour to kill between our thrilling victory in the team-building competition and the Mr. and Ms. Amaze competition. So we convinced the security guard to unlock the game room with the pool table and I taught a girl from Israel and a girl from Sweden to play "billiards" as they called it. Then we went to the Mr. & Ms. Amaze competition. It was essentially just a fun personality/beauty/talent contest. Lenka ended up wining Ms. Amaze. The prize was 50,000 rupees but Lenka thought it was only 5,000 rupees so she decided to announce publicly on stage that she wished to give her prize to the two other finalists. Later that evening when she was telling us about it, we all realized that it was 50,000 and not 5,000. So Lenka basically gave away $1,000. She was pretty upset but in the end I think she was ok with it all. The next day was our Delhi tour. The conference organizers had arranged for the whole group to visit a few famous sites in Delhi. We went to Qutab Minar, Ashkerdam Temple, and Dilli Haat market. First up was Qutab Minar...here is the info from Wikipedia regarding it.

Qutab Minar is the world's tallest brick minaret in Delhi, India. Construction commenced in 1193 under the orders of India's first Muslim ruler Qutb-ud-din Aibak and the topmost storey of the minaret was completed in 1386 by Firuz Shah Tughluq. The Qutab Minar is notable for being one of the earliest and most prominent examples of Indo-Islamic architecture.

Next up was Ashkerdam Temple, it was actually only built 5 years ago. The entire structure was built without any steel and served to revive an ancient artform of India. It had a movie theatre, boat ride through time, and a modern food court inside. It was unbelievably beautiful but for some reason we were not allowed to take our cameras inside. So the only pics we have are from a distance at the bus.

The last place we visited on our Delhi tour was Dilli Haat market. It is a tourist market that sells all the traditional crafts and items of India. You bargain for a good price and I really enjoyed talking them down. Some of us were better than others. I paid 70 rupees for a pashmina that another guy paid 400 rupees for. The starting price on some hand-carved wooden elephants I wanted was 300 rupees each...I paid 70 each. I also got Lori a few nice things which I can't mention here because I want her to surprised. We finally got back on the bus and were taken back to the hotel to freshen up before the big concert. The concert featured the group 'Boney M'...they must be before my time because I had never heard of them. Here are some pics from Qutab Minar, the temple, and the entrance to the market. I will also throw in a pic of Lenka as Ms. Amaze.

Fortunately for Lenka and I we had a few more days left in India. A group of 8 of us were able to hire a couple taxis for the whole day and go back to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. It ended up only being 7 because 1 got sick but we left our hotel at 6am and headed to Agra. We stopped about half way there to stretch our legs and go to the bathroom. While we were stopped Lenka got some really good pics of a monkey who found a juice box. Monkeys were all over the place in India. Some were trained to perform but I just enjoyed watching the wild ones. We finally made it to Agra and the Taj. If you ever go there you should make sure and enter through the East Gate because the lines are much shorter. Words cannot express how amazing the Taj Mahal is. Its presence is so imposing and its beauty unmatched by any edifice I have ever seen before. The entire structure is a giant masoleum for the wife of a former emperor. She died giving birth to their 14th child! He planned to build a matching structure of black marble for himself but ran out of money. The Taj was completed in 1648. Local legend says that the hands of the craftsmen were cut off after its completion to make sure they could never reproduce its majesty. Not sure he would cut off their hands if he was planning a similar structure at his death...but maybe one of the two stories is true. After we finally left the Taj we were starving and it was lunch time. We found a little rooftop restaurant that had an amazing view of the Taj Mahal in the background. It is called the Taj Hotel & Rooftop Restaurant. You should definitely try it the next time you are in Agra, India. I had a mutton burger, fries, garlic bread, and coke for $4. Here are some pics of the monkey, the Taj, and our lunch.

We also went to Argra fort which was very impressive. It had two 70 ft walls seperated by a 40 foot moat that was once filled with alligators! There were 16 different temples inside the fort. We finally made it back to Delhi around 8 pm and went to the pizza place again for dinner. Most people left the night before our trip to Agra so we stayed up late hanging out and saying goodbye. In fact, Adam and I only got 2 hours of sleep before the trip to Agra. Everyone else left the morning after the trip to Agra so Lenka and I were on our own to explore the last day. We ended up going to see the Lotus temple and took a Tuk-tuk (three wheeled taxi) to Old Delhi. We saw the Red Fort which is huge and Jama Masjid which is one the largest mosques in the world. We also found the real Indian market where the locals shop. I got Lori another present there which I cannot disclose at this time and I got myself a pair of shoes for $3. When we were at Red Fort we were asked by a couple from London to take their pic. If you have the locals do it they want money before they return your camera. They were both originally from New York but had moved to London when he got a job with Deutsche Bank. We spent the whole day with them. In fact the pics of the mosque are on their camera because you had to pay for each camera you wanted to use. They are going to email them to us when they get home. We took the Delhi metro back down south after our day of site seeing. It was amazingly clean and nice. It puts Chicago's system to shame. It was fast and smooth as well. You have to go through security similar to the airport and you are not allowed to take pics inside. We took pics before we knew the rule and the security guards forced us to delete them but I was able to keep one they didn't know about. We ended our day by piling all four of us into a tiny tuk-tuk and showed our new friends Dilli Haat market. I helped them and Lenka bargain for a few gifts and then Lenka and I had to get back to the Hotel to leave for the airport. We got to the airport 3 hours before our flight and were at least able to sit together on the 15 hour flight home. When we left Delhi it was 90 degrees and when we arrived in Chicago the wind chill was 20 and it was snowing again. I made it to my apartment at 6am Chicago time. Here are some pics of the farewell party in mine and Adam's room, Red Fort, the real market, Delhi Metro, Tuk-tuks and Lotus Temple.

Well there you go! There were other things seen, other stories to tell, and funny moments to share but there is a good summary. If you want to know the rest you will just have to ask me in person. Please excuse all typos since I was writing this from 1am to 4:30am. Thanks for making it through this incredibly long post! If you ever go to India just learn this phrase...Nahin Shukriya (No, thank you!). Otherwise you will come home with more random stuff from street vendors than you can possibly carry home.

INDIA

Here are a few pics to wet your appetite for the many stories that will follow over the next few days hopefully.
This is me and Lenka. The circumstances surrounding that revelation were less than ideal but it was exciting none the less. I was sitting in class with 20 minutes remaining and I decided to check the Bar Examiners' website to see what time tomorrow the results would be posted. But then I saw PASS LIST posted prominently on the website, so I clicked the link and scrolled down to the Bs...and there it was. Bell, Matthew Kendrick,,,1046. That is my examinee number. I was talking to my beautiful, amazing, and wonderful wife on SKYPE so she was the first to find out. Then my friend Kilian from Switzerland was sitting next to me in class and he could tell something was wrong because I was starting to freak out. I was so excited I could hardly stay in the chair...he asked what was wrong and so I told him and showed him my name. Luckily class ended early and I announced to the whole class...I got an ovation and then many many people congratulating me and offering to take me out to celebrate. There is a restaurant next door so we all went over there to celebrate. Before I went over there, of course I called my wife first, then parents, sisters, and a couple close friends. At the restaurant I sent a mass text message to 25 people or so...Thanks to all who responded via message, phone call, facebook and email. It meant a lot to have so many people happy for me. I really wish Lori and I could have been together when I found out...it somehow feels unofficial finding out without her by my side. On the bright side, I will be able wait and get sworn in and officially be a lawyer after we are together. But now I can at least start applying for jobs and planning the post graduation life.

On a totally seperate note...I leave for India on Sunday. If you were not aware, my friend Lenka (Czech student) and myself are representing The John Marshall Law School at an International Business School Conference in Delhi this next week. We will compete in a debate competition regarding the global economy and the pros/cons of a borderless world. We should get to see the Taj Mahal and all the other sites in Delhi, do a lot of shopping in the local markets, and enjoy being in a different culture. Some of the top business schools from all over the world will be represented. Our program was invited since our LL.M. is International Business & Trade. So I get a free trip to India, well somewhat free...the passport, shots, pills, etc...were a little pricey but far cheaper than the actual trip. I won't be back till the 17th at 5am Chicago time. I have a final in my Intro to Civil Law Systems class on the 19th and leave for Thanksgiving the next week. At some point I still have to finish 5 papers totalling 100 pages. So far I have my 20-25 page International Banking Paper 80% done, my U.S. Free Trade Agreements 20-25 page paper 75% done, and outlines finished for the other 3 papers. My 10-15 page International Employment Law paper is due Decemeber 1st...but other than that the rest are due December 19th. I have a final in U.S. Customs & Import Law on December 9th and fly home for over a month on December 11th. They are letting me take my other final in International Commercial Dispute Resoultion when I get back from the break. Needless to say it will be a very hectic 6 weeks but it will all be worth it when I can be with my wife again and looking for a real job. Not sure exactly where the money to pay the rent is going to come from since all the papers, travel, & finals will cut into work hours but I will be taking donations. Ha ha. It will all work out and I know God will see us through. Thanks to all who have kept Lori and I in your prayers...and please keep it up. I'll will try to post thoughts and pictures after my trip to India. Later!

Matthew K. I was able to go home October 3-10 thanks to a wonderful holiday known as Yom Kippur. I was actually only off on October 8-10th but I decided to take off the 6th and 7th as well so I could go home the weekend before. I originally planned to head home on the 9am flight on the 3rd but then one of my classes was rescheduled for that day from 9-5. So I changed my flight because I was informed that I would not be able to miss the class since it only meets 4 times. A couple weeks before the scheduled trip I learned that two of my classmates also had planned trips and their tickets were non-transferable. They convinced the school to video tape the class and allow them to miss. So I piggy-backed on their situation and was granted permission to miss as well. I changed my flight back to the morning time but decided not to let Lori know. I arranged for my friend Stephen to pick me up from the airport in Birmingham. We stopped for lunch and then drove straight to Lori's school in time to surprise her on her last day in 2nd grade. As a teacher that is....she finished second grade years ago. She was very excited but the surprises were not over...I pretended that I had planned a weekend getaway so we went to her house to pack. I had really just arranged to spend the weekend at the new Montgomery Renaissance Hotel. Our friend Angela works there and she got us an amazing deal! We met some friends for dinner that night at a restaurant in downtown near the hotel and then just relaxed all weekend. During the week I would take Lori to school and then go to the law library or Stephen & Kayla's house to work on my papers. I was able to have lunch with a lot of my friends. It was nice to catch up with them and some of my Professors as well.

On Monday night we went out to the church league softball games and watched my former teammates dominate some other teams. I hung out in the dugout and caught up with my good friend Brodie...among others. He couldn't play because of having his appendix out but it was nice to just sit and catch up on life. Most nights we went out or went over to Kayla and Stephen's house. They are keeping Lucy for us so we had a dual purpose for going over there. Lucy seemed excited to see me but definitely let me know that she was upset with me for leaving her. On Tuesday night we went to the Alabama National Fair...not sure what is 'National' about it but we met our friends Joey & Tiffany there. The circus was the best I had ever been to...also the only I had ever been to. We mainly just walked around and talked to them. It really made me appreciate the blessing that friendships are in our lives. Lori and I were able to have a nice dinner on Thursday night thanks to the generosity of the Lester family and the gift card they gave me for graduation. The week went by way too fast and it made me realize how much I was missing Alabama or at least the people who are there. Being back around the law school and seeing some of the fruits of my labor in the advocacy program, law review, and other things made me realize part of the reason for my missing that place. In law school I was a big fish in a little pond but now I am a little fish in the huge pond of Chicago.

I won't be able to make it back to Bama country until December for Lori's graduation probably. But we will have to go back in the spring or summer to get all of our stuff out of storage and possibly sell the house or locate new tenants. After my trip I realized that Montgomery had become a major part of who I am and I will always be greatful for the opportunities that Jones School of Law gave me but even more thankful for the wonderful friendships that we gained during our 3 year tenure in the 'Deep South'. Lori and I are not sure where the next chapter of our lives will take us but it is now clear that Montgomery will always be a 'home' for us. We spent our first year of marriage there, bought our first home there, raised our first (and if Lori has her way...last) dog there. We both lost grandparents while we lived there, dealt with a family crisis, struggled at times to make ends meet but never felt alone because of the friends we had made. I finished law school there, Lori is finishing her Master's there, we were able to get involved in the University Church and help organize the Young Professionals Ministry. Lori taught 2 year olds and we always helped with VBS. These are the things that have shaped our lives and marriage thus far and will never be taken for granted. We made friendships that will last a lifetime and were given opportunities that solidified our belief that God led us there. They say that law school is the three toughest years of your life and the biggest strain you could put on a young marriage but by leaning on friends and trusting in God we made it through even stronger. While Lori and I will say goodbye to the 'Gump' in December it will always have a special place in our hearts. I will admit that writing this entry has made me miss all of you back in Alabama a great deal and their must be something in my eyes because they are starting to water...weird? I guess that is enough for now. Until next time...Sweet Home Alabama!

Lunch with Scalia

The rumors are true. Justice Antonin Scalia and I had lunch together today! While he sat at another table and there were some 400+ people also there, I am sure he realized it was really just about the two of us. He delivered a wonderful speech as his keynote address looking back on the legacy of Judge Markey of the Federal Circuit. After the lunch I was able to shake his hand and talk to him for all of 10 seconds. No pictures were being allowed but I did get him to sign my copy of his new book. He said he wasn't doing pictures but he would sign my book because I had obviously paid quite a bit for the book and he wouldn't pay that much so I should at least get a signature for parting with my hard earned money. Ha ha. He was very nice and disarmingly charming. I was amazed at how well he worked the room. On a side note, I also had the pleasure of sharing a revolving door with him as he was coming back in the building. He was on one side and I on the other but our eyes met for a split second while we were deciding who was getting in and who was getting out. So I have now met Justices Alito & Scalia. Only 7 more to go! I tried to post a picture of his signature in the book but it isn't working. I will try to upload that and other pictures later on. Until next time...

Horribly overdue!

So sorry for my laziness in Blogging lately. I know my faithful followers have been demanding updates and I have been slack in keeping them happy. A lot has happened since I returned from my Labor Day trip. On September 3, 2008, I made an epic trip to a mecca of baseball wonder...I went to Wrigley field! The match up was the Cubs (obviously) vs. the Astros and unfortunately the Astros completed the first sweep of the Cubs all year. My seat was ok but just being in the atmosphere and seeing the ivy in person was truly remarkable.

I also recently got a job. I am clerking for a solo practitioner here in Chicago who is also an adjunct faculty member at the law school. She is also associated with a firm in France, so I will get to at least get my feet wet in some international work. The hours are flexible and the pay is pretty good. I will generally just draft motions and discovery for civil litigation and help on some probate cases. My first assignment has been to untangle a mess of receipts, bank accounts, checks, and cash withdrawals to create the first annual accounting for a guardianship estate. For my non-lawyer subscribers...two older persons are unable to care for themselves anymore so their daughter has been appointed guardian. Needless to say the record keeping and reporting requirements for a guardianship estate are far more demanding than most people realize. I have to figure out a way to put everything into a court approved report and place each expenditure into the approved budget. So if you are ever appointed guardian or executor of an estate...please seek competent advice early and often! I am usually only planning on working 12-15 hours per week and possibly 20 on a busy week. But this project is due to the court by Friday...so I will probably work 25-30 hours this week. Which would not be so bad, but for the fact I have class every night this week and all day Friday and Saturday. I have decided to give up on sleep for a week to compensate for these demands on my time.

Last Monday, I went to the Field Museum with a group of my classmates. The museum is always interesting and on this day happened to be free. I would suggest if you want to have a good time or find museums boring that you go with a group of friends from all over the world. Their insights and stories that accompanied the exhibits made it even more fun. Plus I was the designated explainer of all things they did not understand. One question I got was, "What is a meteor?" This week they went to the Planetarium but I have been sick all weekend so I was unable to go. Next week I think we are going to the Museum of Science and Industry. They have a German U-boat we can walk through...so that will be fun.

The reason I am sick probably is due to my wild journey to class on Saturday. I had a class schedule for 9-5 on Saturday. I left my apartment at 8am not realizing until I was downstairs that it was pouring down rain. Luckily, being the former boy scout that I am (althought they did kick me out) I was prepared! I pulled out my convenient small umbrella from the specially designed umbrella pocket on my book bag (fancy, I know)...and walked to the bus stop for what is usually a 3-5 minute wait for the bus. After standing at the bus stop for almost 10 minutes, a large gust of wind flipped my umbrella inside out, broke two of the arms and ripped part of the fabric. It was not worth saving so I chucked it in the trash can nearby and continued to wait for the bus under the awning of a nearby building. The awning worked ok but I was still getting wet when the wind blew the rain under the awning. After another 10 minutes of this frustration and no sign of a bus I decided to hail a cab. Apparently every other person had already made this decision because the first 10...yes 10 cabs I saw were already in service. I finally got a cab and was completely soaked at this point. First thing the cabbie said was not the usual, "where you going?" but instead "Where is your umbrella?" I explained that mine had been destroyed by the mighty wind gods. He then handed me a very nice, sturdy, and most likely expensive umbrella and said "here you go, it's yours". Slightly shocked, I politely refused to take the man's umbrella until he explained that a previous passenger had left it earlier in the day. So I took the umbrella and give him a better tip than usual. The cabbie also informed me that the particular bus I was waiting on had been rerouted for the weekend to the next street over for street cleaning purposes. So nearly an hour and $10 later I was at school in time for class, with a new fancy umbrella, and a wet wardrobe.

The class I had on Saturday was on U.S. Free Trade Agreements. The Professor threw out a bunch of possible paper topics and one intrigued me greatly. He said that it would be a great topic but fairly challenging because of the lack of material directly on point. I decided to take on the challenge...so my topic for this class will discuss the constitutionality of the North American Free Trade Agreement's dispute resolution procedures. I was able to find a couple early articles and one court case on point. The case never reached judgment because it settled out of court but I was able to pull up the briefs that were filed before the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. After my initial review I believe the provisions violate the U.S. Constitution. There are multiple ways to attack the issue but I will seek to prove 3. First, the appointment of arbitrators by the U.S. Trade Representative without the advice & consent of the Senate violates Article II's appointments clase. Second, the complete ban on judicial review by U.S. Courts violates Article III. Finally, the mandate of arbitration to all parties subject to NAFTA violates the due process clause of the 5th amendment by infringing upon the right to take your case to trial by jury without affording the parties due process of law. This will end up reading more like a brief but is one of my papers that I believe may have a legitimate shot at publication.

That is all I have for now. I will try to be more diligent in my blogging efforts and hope that you are all doing well!

Trains & Golf

I decided to go to Kirksville and visit grandparents, aunts, uncles, & cousins for Labor Day after I found out that I could take Amtrak from Chicago to La Plata for only $40 each way. My cousin Heath was the only one that knew I was coming so he picked me up on Friday from the train station. I was a little nervous about the quality of accomodations on Amtrak but I must say I was pleasantly surprised. It had very comfortable seats with lots of leg room. The seats reclined and you could walk around and play cards or read a book at a table or go to the observation car to see nature's beauty go by.

The seating procedure seems sort of random...they just write your seat number on an index card and hand it to you as you board the train. I did not see any method to their madness but it worked out. I ended up sitting my a med student from Kirksville College of Medicine who is originally from Alabama. He knew my Uncle Glenn who is an orthopedic surgeon and teaches at the med school. His wife almost went to Faulkner for College so they were familiar with that school. He is living in Chicago this year working on a Master's in Clinical Research. We talked for nearly all of the 5+ hour trip.

Once I got to Kirksville, Heath and I surprised Aunt Elaine, Uncle Dennis, and Cousins Ashley, Kaden & Kody. They were all very excited. Well Dennis was asleep but I am sure he was excited the next morning when he found out. We also were able to surprise Grandma Carol (Heath's grandma that I claim as my own) and Grandma & Grandpa Bell. It took a few seconds for them to even recognize me because I have my head shaved and kind of look like Heath now. I was also lucky enough to play golf twice while I was there. It still amazes me how well grandpa can play when he is nearly blind. Heath won day 1 and I won day 2. My last 9 holes went very well...I had 3 pars and a birdie. It was nice to end on a high note.

I left Kirksville on Tuesday morning and headed back to the city. I sat across from an Amish couple on the train and had some nice conversations with them. Once I made it back to the city I went quickly to my apartment, grabbed my books and laptop and headed to class. It was back to the grind...

Well that is all I have regarding Labor Day weekend. I will try to post some pics from the weekend soon.

Hit the ground running!

Well I have hit the ground running here in the Windy City. The weather here has been absolutely beautiful. 70s & 80s with no rain so far. I know that will change and the winter will be tough but right now I can't believe how much I enjoy being outside. I mentioned in an earlier note that I have to write a whole lot papers for my classes. I have begun to choose topics for some of them so I thought I would share them with you.

For my International Banking & Finance Law class I am planning to write a paper on the history of Islamic Banking and the modern response by America's banking industry in this ever growing market. If you were not aware...Islam does not allow devout Muslims to pay or receive interest. Therefore banks have to come up with alternative methods of mortgage, CDs, and the like. For example, instead of loaning money to buy a car and having it repaid at a fixed interest rate, a bank will actually buy the car and immediately resell it to the Muslim applicant for an agreed upon profit. Then the payments are not principal and interest but only principal. The American banking industry has been slightly behind the rest of the world in coming up with investment options that comply with Shari'ah (Islam Law). I am going to focus on the conflict of interest that such options may pose to non-Islamic investors who would prefer such an arrangement. Economists estimate that American Muslims have around 17 BILLION dollars to invest that are currently not invested in our economy because of the lack of compliant options. This paper will be 20-25 pages.

For my multinational corporations class I am planning to write a paper on a theory of large multinational corporations essentially subsidizing the development of infrastructure in underdeveloped countries with the goal of creating new markets for their products. This will work in theory but probably not in reality. To break it down into a simple example...IPODs. Millions and millions of people have Apple IPODs all over this and other developed countries. But if you could show Apple and other large companies that if say Zambia in southern Africa were to develop a better infrastructure and job options for its citizens then as the standard of living increases through foreign investment in that economy...the market for IPODs and Macbooks in Zambia would increase thus offsetting their investment in the development of that economy and eventually making them a profit. It is a highly theoretical proposition that would take the work of economists, lawyers, diplomats, and many others to put in to place but it is an interesting idea. Various countries currently do something similar through the World Bank and International Finance Corporation but I will propose setting up a similar entity from corporate donations. One major hurdle would be overcoming the accusation that such investments would violate the fiduciary duties of corporate directors. Essentially a board of directors is supposed to make as much money as possible and then give it to investors through dividends or stock growth. There would have to be concrete evidence of the potential success of my proposal to avoid corporations being sued for misuse of funds. It may be hard to believe but there are a lot of cases on the books where companies are sued for giving too much to charity. Welcome to the world of capitalism! This paper will be 30-35 pages.

For my International Employment Law class I am considering writing a paper about the application of America's anti-discrimination laws to corporations around the world. The idea being that if a company would like to do business or is chartered here in America...they must not discriminate in their hiring process any where in the world. This again is a theoretical working proposition that would be difficult to implement because of the conflict of laws in various countries. This is one of my short papers (10-15 pages) and so I won't be able to go very in depth after my initial proposal and the history up to now.

I also have to write a paper on the topic of U.S. Free Trade Agreements (20-25 pages) and The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (10-15 pages). I will also have 3 written finals in the following classes: Introduction to Civil Law Systems, U.S. Customs & Import Law, and International Commercial Dispute Resolution. As you can see I am going to be very busy over the next few months but it should make things easier for the Spring semester when I have my lovely wife here. I will do my best to update on a regular basis and I do appreciate all the emails and words of encouragement from many of you!

I'm not in Kansas Anymore...or Oklahoma or Alabama!

I had orientation for my LLM tonight. I received all my syllabi and first week assignments for classes. Needless to say after looking them over I was feeling incredibly overwhelmed. I have over 1oo pages of information to read for my first 2 classes on Thursday. I have to write over 90 pages of publishable quality papers in addition to my 3 written finals. After the initial big orientation on the library, internet, id cards, subway passes, and the like...we broke out into our individual LLM centers. In my group there were only 3 Americans. I have classmates from China, Kenya, Mexico, Sweden, Paraguay, Ukraine, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, India, and Australia. After talking to some of them I realized that I am probably not nearly as overwhelmed as they are...many of them cannot find a place to live because they do not have a SSN for the landlords to run credit checks. Some of them struggle getting around because they know only a little english. I am going to try and help a couple of them find some apartments near me this weekend. I am sure I will do fine in my program. I just need to get back into the full time study mode. I have also been stressed about finding a job. The school said I shouldn't have a problem finding a job as a research assistant but they are not sending out the email to faculty until tomorrow so I won't start working for at least another week and even when I start I know my paycheck will not even cover my rent and utilities. Lori is working hard back in Alabama so she should be able to help me with some of the expenses. Tomorrow starts the beginning of a very difficult 4 months or so but I will get through it and be stronger for it. On a bright note...I am going to be way too busy to worry about the Texas Bar Results...someone call me on November 7th and remind me to check the website and see if I passed. Well that is all I have for now...until next time...adios amigos!

The SHOEBOX

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235181574079405010" style="FLOAT: left; We just brought up a few things from the truck as we got our first look at the apartment. IT IS TINY! The measurements I was given were way off because the living area is only about 11 x 13 and not 13 x 15. Those two feet each direction make a big difference. If you just take wall to wall of what is mine including the closet and bathroom...it measures about 16 x 18. Less than 300 sq. ft. I will try to post some pictures soon. We got everything to fit after a few modifications (i.e. cutting notches in the bookcase to fit it next to the desk, setting the night stand on the dresser, and stacking storage cabinets that were to be additional kitchen counter space). The good news is that the neighborhood is incredible. The subway, grocery store, walgreens, ace hardware, and restaurants are all close by. The condo building across the street starts selling at $1.8 Million. Everything is very nice and it must be safe because we saw women and women with children walking around even late at night by themselves. Washington Park is only a couple blocks south of my building and Michigan Avenue is only about 4 blocks east of me. While it is tiny I think I will really enjoy it. I did have room for the futon to fold out....so if anyone wants to make a trip to Chicago I will supply the room if you supply the money for entertainment. I am too poor to afford to go anywhere! I have class generally Monday-Thursday nights but am free on Friday-Sunday. I checked my schedule and figured out that I will be free on the following weekends if anyone wants to come see me. You can come any time really but I will only be able to serve as your tour guide on the following weekends...

August 22-24
September 5-7
September 26-28
October 17-19
November 7-9
November 14-16
November 21-23
December 5-7

Call me to make your reservations today! 334-467-4331

Until next time...I know you have many options in blog reading and thank you for spending your time with me. Lori got here safely last night and we are going camping for the weekend with a bunch of friends in Oklahoma.

1 Day Down!

I just finished the first day of the Texas Bar Exam. It is only half a day and it could not have gone better. The MPT required me to write a memo to a senior partner regarding a custody issue. I did this for John Henig at Copeland Franco about 10 times. I had two statutes and two cases to draw the law from and some facts for me and against me. I feel like I wrote a wonderful memo and finished with enough time to proofread and correct a few small mistakes. My penmanship was OK but I will need to focus more on that when I have to write 12 essays on Thursday. The second half of the morning consisted of Civil & Criminal Procedure and Evidence. I had 90 minutes to complete the two sets. Each set has 20 short answer questions. I started with Civil Procedure and felt like I knew the answer to every single question without flinching. Criminal Procedure started off with a question I was completely unsure of...I made up something and feel like I probably got some points for my answer. There was one other question like that in Criminal Procedure towards the end. So out of 40 total P & E questions I felt like I nailed 38 of them. I also finished P & E in only 50 minutes. I always finished tests early in law school and I think I was first of the more than 1,400 people at my test site. This is a huge relief because I am sure I now have a large cushion going into the final two days. Tomorrow is the MBE (Multiple choice). I have 3 hours to do 100 questions in the morning and the same in the afternoon. If I can maintain my average of 150 raw points I will be on my way to passing even if I fall asleep during the essays on Thursday. The nerves are calm and while I didn't sleep a whole lot last night...I think tonight will be a different story. I appreciate all the calls, emails, and facebook messages of encouragement. I should also mention that I arrived at the test site around 30 minutes early and took a few minutes to read the Bible. Amazingly, my Bible fell open to Philippians chapter 4 and I just started reading. It was a huge encouragement. In two days I will be able to say..."Ihave fought the good fight, I have finished the BAR".

Clerkship anyone?

Today is my last full day in my house before I head off to Texas for the bar exam. I woke up this morning around 8 am with the intent to study until noon or so and then finish packing. After checking my email I made a decision that adversely affected my studying for the rest of the day. As most of you know I applied for some clerkships with a couple Judges on the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals here in Montgomery for the year after my LL.M. I hadn't received a rejection letter from either of them but also had not been invited for an interview. There is a clerkship blog...two of them actually that track when and where Judge's hire from. I went to one of them to see if the two Judges has possibly already hired and were waiting till after the bar to let me down easy. Sure enough according the BLOG Judge Dubina was finished hiring and it appeared Judge Carnes was also done but then I looked at the schools from which they hired... According to the post Judge Carnes had hired a graduate of Faulkner University. Now the information that is on these Blogs is leaked by current clerks for the Judges and is known for leaking out before the candidates even know they have been selected. I was shocked! As far as I knew, I was the only Faulkner graduate to apply for a clerkship and it was for the 2009-2010 term. It seems unlikely that any of my classmates would have applied for a clerkship for a year in advance unless they were pursuing a one year degree or fellowship as well. My friend Chase and I are the only ones that are doing so and he has not applied for a clerkship. Is it possible Judge Carnes had decided to hire me but was waiting to interview and formally extend the offer until after I finish the bar exam. My head was spinning and I had to go wake up Lori and let her know what was going on. I immediately emailed a Professor of mine who lives next door to the Judge and had originally introduced us at the 1L Moot Court Tournament I ran in the Spring. She didn't think there was anyway Carnes would hire a Faulkner graduate that wasn't me. It would be a huge coincidence that the Judge I personally met and applied for a clerkship with, would hire the first Faulkner student ever to obtain a clerkship at this level and I would have not heard a word about it. Let's all keep our fingers crossed that I am that Faulkner graduate who has been "hired" or at least he has seperated me from the herd and is expecting to make me the offer. Let's hope some eager young clerk jumped the gun on letting the blog world know and there isn't some other Faulkner graduate swooping in and taking the clerkship from me. So, basically with all these possibilities and scenarios running through my head and the possibility that the dream of clerking for one the nation's highest courts is actually going to come true...I couldn't think straight. I abandoned studying (besides if I don't know it by now...it ain't getting in my brain) and started packing furiously. Now, on top of the stress I have about the bar exam, moving to a new state, neither of us having jobs in a few days, and all the upcoming travel....I am overwhelmed with the possibility of this clerkship. Let us all pray that I am the one the blogs speak of and confirmation of this fact comes swiftly. I leave for Dallas tomorrow and will try to update you from the hotel room as the bar exam drama unfolds.

The Shoebox

The wall with the window in the living area is 12' 8" long. I am actually feeling better this week than I did last week. My study plan appears to paying off and I am doing really well on practice essays. I also took another practice MBE (Multiple choice section) and got 75% right. The average score is around 60% right. I also found out yesterday that I was approved for my shoebox apartment in Chicago. Lori and I have been packing a lot and we are really close to being finished it looks like. It is kind of sad leaving our beautiful house but maybe we will be back. On the clerkship front I found out this week that one of my soccer teammates is the nephew of Judge Dubina on the Eleventh Circuit that I applied with. So, he is going to put in a good word for me at the next family get together. I heard from Judge Carnes' assistant last week that he was going to wait to interview until August which means if I get an interview I will have to fly back from Chicago for it. That will cost a pretty penny but if I get the job it will all be worth it. Let's all keep our fingers crossed on the clerkship situation. In other news, I had lunch yesterday with three of my good lawyer friends and it was almost surreal after lunch when I realized I may never see a couple of them ever again. That feeling will probably occur again on Friday night. We are having a pool party/cook out with a lot of friends over at our friend's apartment complex. It looks like we will have a good turnout and if the rain will hold off it will be wonderful evening of food, fun, & friends. Well I better get back to studying now.

My hand is killing me!

Good afternoon from lovely Montgomery, Alabama. My hand feels like someone has stomped on it...this is my own fault but I felt compelled to complain anyways. I decided that instead of just reading over the lecture handouts given to me by barbri to prepare for some practice essay questions, I would hand-write shortened outlines to force myself to learn the material. On the one hand (no pun intended....ok it was intended) I am learning the material quite well but on the other hand (the one that is killing me) it is rather painful. One positive thing is that my hand will be in prime essay writing shape for July 31st when I have to write 12 essays in 6 hours. I typed all of my exams through law school because my penmanship is horrible...seriously...I don't know how I passed elementary school. I have been focused on writing legibly lately and it takes a significant amount of effort. I have now finished writing outlines for every essay subject except two sub-topics that were short enough already (Tax & Bankruptcy). With a grand total of 124 handwritten pages under my belt (actually on 3 different legal pads) I feel that I have conditioned my now angered appendage and forced an enormous amount of information into my head. I only have one week left here in Montgomery and that reality is finally setting in. I am going to miss this place (especially my lovely wife) but at the same time I have some new and exciting challenges to look forward to. One more week of miserable bar preparation mixed with some packing, moving, mowing, and farewell lunches and dinners and I will be off to Dallas for the Bar. After that I think we are going camping with friends, to Duncan to see Lori's family, to OKC for Jen's wedding, to Tulsa to unload all the wedding junk, then back to Alabama for probably less than 24 hours. But for now I am just enjoying each day that I have left here...last night me and the boys went to the Montgomery Biscuits (Tampa Bay's AA Team) baseball game. I bought a hat (I love to collect hats), a bratwurst, and some ice cream. The lights went out for 20 minutes but since it was $2 beer night all the drunks kept us entertained by throwing soft baseballs at each other and onto the field. Tomorrow night Lori and I are going to see George Jones at the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre (Yes I spelled Centre right). Next week I am supposed to have lunch with some of my lawyer buddies and then a dinner with some other friends. All that capped off by a wedding on Saturday night before I leave next Sunday. In between all this I need to prepare a Bible lesson for class this Sunday and next. If I could give up some sleep and still function I would probably do it but alas I must have my beauty rest or I am no fun to be around. Well this post has dragged on for an inordinate amount of time and I feel that I shall now bid you farewell until another random moment of blogging strikes my fancy. Ciao!

Starting to Freak Out

So...I thought the countdown clock on my Facebook would be a fun idea, but that was about a year ago. Now it's just an evil reminder of the impending doom that is the bar exam. I'm now having difficulty sleeping, and my wife thinks that I'm a little cranky. I'm not really scared that I'm going to fail, but that remote possibility is like an elephant sitting on my chest. So, for now, I take it one breath at a time and hope that in 15 days the elephant will get the heck off of me. Then I'll just be stressed about moving 800 miles away from my wife and my life in Alabama to the cold, windy city of Chicago. Oh, and I recently found out that Texas is the most inefficient bar exam graders in the world! My friends in Alabama will get results in mid September, but I will have the joy, pleasure and privilege of waiting until at least November 7th to learn my fate! This brings up an interesting question. I have been thinking of taking another bar exam in February, but will have to register before I receive any results from the Texas Bar Exam. So, do I register as a student, or a licensed attorney? And do I register to retake the Texas Bar, or have enough arrogance to assume I've passed and register for some other state? If you would like for me to register for the bar in your state, please send me the requisite application fee, anywhere from $500 to $1500. Also, please include a statement of interest from residents of your state and proof of citizenship notarized appropriately.

Blogging Begins

I am not usually one to discuss my thoughts or feelings with too many people but I have decided to change that. I am currently studying for the bar exam and getting ready to move to Chicago in about a month and a half. Lori won't be able to come to Chicago with me initially so I figured this would be a good way to let her and everyone else know what I am up to on a regular basis. So welcome to my BLOG. The title "The Perpetual Student" is my way of making fun of myself for not getting a job upon graduation from high school, or college, or law school, but continuing my life as a student by pursuing my LL.M. in Chicago. There is such a thing as an S.J.D. (Doctor of Juridical Science) which is higher than the LL.M. but I think I will stop with school after LL.M. The next month or so will probably be pretty boring for most of you...I will most likely just vent about the frustrations I encounter while studying and the stress of the bar exam experience but hopefully I will throw in a few rays of sunshine to brighten you day along the way.
